Katie Hawthorne is a writer, researcher, and journalist. She lives in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2022, she earned her Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh with a dissertation titled “Contextualising Liveness: Digital Distributed, Digitally Mediated, and Digitally Located Theatre in Edinburgh and Berlin, 2017–19.” As a former alumna of the Academy, she explored work ethics in new forms of digital audience engagement in her project “Automating the Audience.” As a journalist, she writes about art, culture, and technology for publications such as The Guardian, The Scotsman, and The Stage.
Since May 2022, she has also been a member of the Academy’s team. She is working on the redesign of the digital archive and the Academy’s portal, and is in dialogue with the residencies to find creative forms of knowledge exchange and research documentation.
