[Who] Rules to Encounter

How will we interact with AI systems and humanoid robotics in the future?

How do we want to allow autonomously operating humanoid robots to participate in social life and work? These questions are at the heart of the artistic research project by artist and choreographer Silke Grabinger and the Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund.

In iterative development sprints with dancers from the Dortmund Ballet / NRW Junior Ballet, students, inclusive ensembles and amateur groups, rules for interacting with humanoid robotics are being developed and tested artistically and choreographically. The movements are captured using motion capture with generative AI. The aim is to create a behaviour library for interacting with humanoid robotics over the course of the project. Finally, the findings will be made artistically accessible to the public in one-on-one performances and shown at festivals.

The research process will be accompanied by iterative scientific support (including from the Vienna University of Technology, the JKU Linz and the University of Art and Design Linz) and discussed publicly. The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML, Dortmund) has been gained as a further partner. "[Who] Rules to Encounter" is funded by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes as part of the "Art & AI – Fund for New Artistic Perspectives on AI and Society" program.
