As long as 100 years ago, artistic research and experimentation on the subject of man and machine was carried out in the stage workshop at the historic Bauhaus. Inspired by Oskar Schlemmer's stage experiments and Gropius' idea of total theater, an interdisciplinary team led by the Interactive Media Foundation has created a virtual world in which the question of the relationship between man and machine in the digital age is explored - with choreography by Richard Siegal.
Using VR goggles, visitors are immersed in a huge, virtual stage construction and run through a dance choreography across three levels with a dance machine that they activate. They are accompanied by the question of their real influence on the space and the machine. The intertwining of man-made choreography, personal intervention and machine algorithm results in ever new forms of movement and dance in space.
"Das Totale Tanz Theater 360" enables a holistic and immediate experience through the interplay of different arts with state-of-the-art digital technology. Based on the idea and dramaturgy of the Interactive Media Foundation, choreographer Richard Siegal has developed a choreography that has been digitized using body scanning and motion capture techniques and rearranged in three-dimensional space. The experts from Artificial Rome were responsible for designing the scenography and costumes as well as the technical implementation. The dramaturgy is carried by the electronic music of composer Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch.
"Das Totale Tanz Theater" was awarded four Golden Nails by the Art Directors Club and a - very rarely awarded - Grand Prix in the Digital category and was named Best of the Best by the Red Dot Award.

"Das Totale Tanz Theater 360" is a production of Interactive Media Foundation and Filmtank in cooperation with ZDF and ARTE and was developed as part of the Bauhaus Spirit program. The VR experience "Das Totale Tanz Theater", on which the video work is based, was funded by the Bauhaus heute fund of the German Federal Cultural Foundation and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.
