dESIGN12+ #6: JANA KERIMA STOLZER & LEX RÜTTEN

About superorganisms, multi-perspective narratives, and their embodiment in multimedia installations

The exploration of more-than-human organisms, such as plants, microorganisms, and fungi, alongside the multimedia experience of their stories, is central to Jana Kerima Stolzer and Lex Rütten's artistic practice. The artist duo has collaborated for nearly nine years in various institutional settings and contexts. Their artistic projects start from complex ensembles of human and more-than-human beings within the technosphere, whose stories are presented in performances and multimedia installations. Often, these projects are founded on intricate narratives delivered by protagonists based on Earth's more-than-human inhabitants: digital beings resembling hybrids of nature and technology, abstracted as digital 3D-animated characters, who perform in musical-like environments. The works call for a shift in perspective in various ways. The narratives are grounded in extensive research that precedes the artistic creation. The artists pose the question of how one can reconnect with the organism of nature and what narratives are necessary for developing empathy toward the environment we often take for granted. In their guest lecture, the duo will provide insight into their artistic practice by presenting exemplary projects and offering an exclusive preview of an upcoming production set to premiere at the end of June.

Jana Kerima Stolzer and Lex Rütten have collaborated as an artist duo since 2016. Their multimedia installations and performances explore the technological environment that shapes and transforms not just humans but also flora and fauna. Their narratives merge historical and scientific research with science fiction to imagine the (im)possible futures. In 2023, the duo launched their first institutional solo exhibition at Hartware MedienKunstVerein in Dortmund, curated by Dr. Inke Arns. In 2024, they had their first solo exhibition in Seoul (KR) at Loop Alt Space. In November 2024, they will participate in the exhibition SPECULATION AND DECAY by Aksioma in Nova Gorica, Slovenia. A new work is currently on view in the exhibition "Hypercreatures" at the Max Ernst Museum Brühl and another will be on view at the end of June in "Tatort Paderborn - Der Fluss bin ich"! Both studied at the Kunstakademie Münster, where Jana Kerima Stolzer graduated as a master student of Aernout Mik. Lex Rütten transferred to the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and graduated as a master student of Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster. Both work as freelance artists and curators.
