Hanna Rode

Fellow

Hanna Rode is an artist working in theater, opera & film. As a stage and costume designer she realized projects at the Deutsche Oper, the Schauspielhaus Hannover, the Théâtrè de la Ville de Luxembourg, the Landestheater Linz and the Wuppertaler Bühnen, among others. She is co-screenwriter and costume designer of the film ´Kontener´ (directed by Sebastian Lang), which premiered at the Berlinale and was nominated for the European Film Award.

In 2022 she was part of an artist residency program of the Münchener Kammerspiele where she focused on the puppet as a living object. Since then she is exhibiting her interactive sculptures and video pieces. Her work is based on the idea of using the face and the body as a living canvas to make emotions visible, thus depicting the human being in a radical interpenetration of interiority and exteriority. She often works with masks in this process. The figures that emerge are „Frankensteinian characters“ - often crudely composed and suspended between digital and analog being.

She's interested in the imperfect, the rough & the `sweetly creepy`. In September 2023 she starts her fellowship at the Academy for Theatre and Digitality to research on how to implement violent scenarios in hybrid puppetry.
