We are looking for a Video and Media Artist (m/f/d) who works full-time for the department of Audio-Visual Media technology and Audio/Video production at the Academy for Theatre and Digitality, Dortmund. Employment and payment are based on the “NV Bühne Vertrag”.    

The Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund is looking for a committed person to join our artistic work to link theatre, digital culture and audiovisual innovation. We are looking for someone to start at your earliest convenience. 

With over 700 employees, Theater Dortmund is one of the largest multi-genre theatres in the German-speaking theatre world. More than 250,000 people attend the approximately 800 performances the theatre is producing each year. The theatre’s six departments offer an ambitious repertoire at five different venues, as well as guest performances.    

The Academy for Theatre and Digitality, founded in 2019 as a sixth division, is an exciting place for new forms of collaboration, creativity and digitality, for art and research, a great and unusual employer in the new digital area in the port of Dortmund, and a globally unique institution for artistic research, digital innovation and technology-oriented training. We are the centre for the development of new theatre forms and technologies, which are significantly influenced by digitalization, and provide artists who research and work with digital methods (Motion capturing, XR, VR, AR, Robotics, AI, Sensor technology, coding, etc.) with an internationally unique research environment. We also act as an important cultural policy initiator and are a hub for the exchange of knowledge and methods of artistic-technical issues related to digitality in theatre.

What we need 

  • Design and implementation of innovative projects: Development and implementation of audiovisual concepts and live productions that expand the theater experience and integrate digital narratives. 
  • Technical direction and production: Responsibility for the planning and execution of audio and video productions in close collaboration with artists, coders and international creative partners. 
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration: Participation in artistic development processes that combine theatre tradition and digital innovation – from experimental film projects to live animation formats. 
  • Technological development: Using and improving media technology systems to implement contemporary digitality in theatre. 
  • Transfer of knowledge to artists, institutions and students: Hosting workshops, training and educating at irregular intervals (also in German language). 
  • Artistic advice / Event consulting 
  • Internal media production for archives, webinars and How-to videos  

Your profile  

  • Academic and artistic qualifications: Degree in Media art, Film/Media studies, Digital culture or a related field - alternatively, relevant artistic experience. 
  • Experience in audiovisual production: Practical knowledge of Audio/Video production, ideally in theater, film or experimental media projects. 
  • Technical expertise: Confident in using media technology, editing and post-production software, and live broadcasting systems. Good knowledge of or an active interest in learning current programs such as OBS/streaming, media servers (e.g. Resolume), game engines (e.g. Unreal Engine) and motion capture systems (e.g. OptiTrack) 
  • Creativity and innovative spirit: Passion for developing new forms of narration and willingness to pursue interdisciplinary approaches.
  • Ability to work in a team and strong communication skills: Strong ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and to develop projects collaboratively. Joy to transfer knowledge in different contexts.
  • Good English and German language skills
